Live, enjoy and dare..... also with vitiligo!

Columns from a mother

Esther van Etten from Westerbeemster is the mother of 13-year-old twins, Lucie and Mila. Lucie has vitiligo, her twin sister does not. In a column in the members magazine Spotlight! Esther tells how Lucie and her family deal with her vitiligo.

Only 2 years old
Lucie was only a few months old when she got her first white spots. The dermatologist diagnosed her with vitiligo when she was just 2 years old.
Out Spotlight! No. 1 of 2018:

'We taught Lucie to deal with the harsh outside world.'

Secondary school
The first year in high school. With a lump in her throat, Esther lets her daughter enter the large schoolyard. What awaits her?
Out Spotlight! No. 3 of 2018:

'The trendy hat was only worn at home, certainly not on the class outing.'

Annual stain check
Every year more spots appear and existing spots become larger. Not having control over the progress was something Esther found difficult. And Lucie herself?
Out Spotlight! No. 1 of 2019:

'After all these years, I stopped doing the Spring Stain Check.'

In the Youth Journal
What is it like to have vitiligo as a child? That was a question from the Youth Journal on World Vitiligo Day. Did Lucie dare to talk about this?

Out Spotlight! no 3 of 2019:

'The JeugdJournaal had made a nice broadcast of it: Lucie was herself on TV.'
